CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) Job Responsibilities

Serving residents in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort and within limits as defined by delegated tasks

Participating in the formulation and follow through of the resident's nursing care plan

Ensuring that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which respects the needs and rights of individuals

Adhering to instructions establishing shift routines issued by the nursing supervisor or charge nurse

Performing certified nursing assistant duties based on established methods and techniques and in conformance with recognized standards

Assuming responsibility for varied resident care duties as assigned by the charge nurse including admitting (assisting with resident admission assessments), discharging, transferring, and caring for residents' personal belongings

Assisting the professional nurse with resident treatments and vitals, as necessary

Taking and recording residents' weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respiration

Assisting residents with self-medications, as directed

Collecting charts, records, and reports as directed

Reporting changes in the conditions of residents, family member concerns, and resident complaints to the charge nurse and/or supervisor

Assisting all residents with their meals and providing in between meal nourishment, as well as fresh ice and water to the bedside

Helping with daily hygiene to include bathing residents in their bed, tub, or shower, combing their hair, and cleaning and cutting their fingernails

Bagging soiled linen and delivering to the dirty linen area, and cleaning items in a domestic washer/drier if assigned

Obtaining clean linens and supplies as directed, cleaning utility rooms, kitchen areas and all other nursing areas, as assigned

Cleaning and sanitizing resident equipment

Making beds (both occupied and unoccupied)

Answering residents' call light or bell, delivering messages, administering bedpans and urinals, and cleaning areas of spillage or accidents caused by the resident

Verifying that all residents have wrist bands and medication, picture, and door tags

Accompanying residents when transported outside the facility for appointments as needed

Receiving and escorting visitors and interacting with residents, families, visitors and employees

Transferring residents' belongings and equipment as directed and assisting with postmortem care

Carrying out other tasks as requested in situations where hands-on intervention or participation may be required

Participating in the orientation of new nursing assistants

Performing other duties as requested

CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) Qualifications and Skills

Completion of a state approved certified nursing assistant program

Completion of a medication assistance in-service program from an RPH licensed in the state

High school education or high school equivalency diploma (preferred)

Verification of a negative TB skin test (annual requirement)

Minimum of 12 hours of CNA continuing education programs provided by the facility, in order to maintain certification

Knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering simple treatments and providing related bedside resident care services

Understanding of the standard techniques used in providing personal services for residents and in caring for equipment and supplies

Awareness of safety hazards to residents and self

Familiarity with facility regulations and the location of various facility departments

Understanding of basic medical asepsis, sterile techniques, and universal precautions to avoid infection of residents and contamination of equipment and supplies

Ability to work rotating shifts and in different units as residents' needs require (specific scheduling will be under the direction of the nursing supervisor)

Ability to positively interact with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public

Ability to read, write, and understand the English language

Good physical and mental health
